John Ruskin
8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900

John Ruskin was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era.

He was also an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist.

In all of his writing, he emphasised the connections between nature, art and society.

He wrote on subjects ranging from geology to architecture, myth to ornithology, literature to education, and botany to political economy and was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century up to the First World War.

"Let every dawn be to you as the beginning of life, and every setting sun be to you as its close."

"The first test of a truly great man is his humility. By humility I don't mean doubt of his powers or hesitation in speaking his opinion, but merely an understanding of the relationship of what he can say and what he can do."

John Ruskin

"Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather."

John Ruskin
